What does the 'engine warning' look like? Reduced power etc? I'd find somebody with a BMW capable code reader. I bet your engine is setting a code for what you're experiencing but it's not enough to trigger the CEL. Might be simple as old spark plugs or a dodgy coil. Re-starting clears the glitch until the next event.

Later E60s dispensed with the warmup gauge/rev marker (damned shame...), but if your indicator is showing less than 'normal/warmed up' temperature that means the coolant hasn't reached full operating temperature yet. And if the coolant isn't fully warmed up, the oil certainly isn't. Hard driving when the oil hasn't fully warmed usually isn't a good thing for long engine life.

Yeah, that's an engine fault/reduced power icon. I've seen it as a result of an intermittent failure on my crank position sensor (CPS), or a series of bad misfires (coils, plugs, DI injectors) on other turbo cars. When the CPS glitches, the engine can run at reduced power using the cam sensors for speed detection.

Codes will be revealing.

 

I've got a 545i w/ a V8.
Got some codes:

27A0 Fan, electronics box
274E Misfire detection, sumcheck error
2748 Misfire detection, cylinder 7
283F oil pressure switch

I replaced the oil pressure switch last summer because it was leaking oil. it's a tough reach, and I wasn't sure I got the connector to click on properly. Maybe it's loose or off.

This happened a couple times last winter too. Again, after driving for only about 5 minutes, If I step on the gas, when the revs climb to 4000 rpm it causies a misfire to occur and the engine light will come on. This has never happened during warm weather. It may have been other cylinders too.

Could just be the coil on #7. Try switching the coil position and see if the misfire changes location with the coil. At least #7 isn't too hard to reach.
