yes, exactly. I ignored it for few months after read the posts. Yes it was ticking in the cold start and it was gone after the warm up but now my car got it permanently but less noise than the cold start of course.

So I don't want to pay more $$$ for the repair so it leaves me 2 choices:

1) Sell the car as is (of course I will mention the buyer the problem)
or
2) Keep it and get the fix (maybe sell it too after the repair)

What do you think?

 

It's hard to say what to do without hearing it live and in person. If it's just a minor annoyance, I'd live with it. Otherwise, if you really think it will drive you nuts, you need to weigh the cost of fixing it against any loss you'd take, if any, on selling it. Good luck, and next time you buy a used car, maybe you should try to get one that's a few years into the production run.

 

Even those "a few years into the production run" has engine ticking noises but is it related to the valve lifters out of tolerance? *shrugs* who knows... PLUS! the 545 engine has been in production since 2001! the introduction of the E65!!!! how much longer do you wait?

 

Ok I just started looking a 2006/2007 550i in the market now or maybe a 2006 M5 if my pocket allows me.... lol

Meanwhile I decided to sell the car "as is" and already posted the ads. Hopefully it will be gone soon! Let's see....

I wish I knew the repairs for BMWs (I would DIY changing the lifters).... I tried to find a post about the DIY on the net and nothing.....

 

Trust me, you don't want to even think about screwing around with the Valvetronic heads. There are too many variables and you would probably only make things worse. Take a look at one of the diagrams on the BMW web site (if they are still there) that depict Valvetronic. There are enough levers and cams and bearings for three standard OHC engines.

 

OK it was rather cool here yesterday morning and my 05 545i made its ticking/rapping noises for about 15 minutes waiting for the engine to warm up and I decided I was tired of it. I also noted that the noise never really goes away, just less noticeable when the car is warm.

Because I am under warranty I took the approach with the dealer that I am concerned about long term engine damage and wanted to make sure I reported the problem so they could correct it before more expensive repairs were required.

I asked the service adviser if this was known problem or if other customer have complained, answer Yes there have been issues with engine noise on these cars. So my car is going in next week. The SA said the repair is usually a "bleed down" of the lifters (what ever that means).

So if the Canada dealership is playing dumb about engine noise as a common problem in these cars they s u c k. There is a known issue and known procedure that should correct the problem. Failure to disclose this information is in my opinion grounds for an irate call to BMW of Canada. These dips need to understand that in the "information age" you can't deceive the customer like they used to.

I never buy first year models, ever. You never get discounts so you pay top price and they always, always, always make improvements/fixes to the model as it ages.

My best BMW's by far were my 2003 E39 525i, last of the E39's and my 06 E46 M3, same thing last of the model run.

My current 05 545i (second year of the E60) is great and I love it but it has a lot of issues. Luckily for me most of them were fixed when it came off lease. But as discussed above it's going back in for that ticking noise next week...
