Default Engine Oil Questions

Hi.

2006 BMW 525i here.

My questions are regarding the engine oil.

I have searched the Internet to find out what engine oil I should use in my car but keep getting different results:
0W 30, 0W 40, 5W 30, 10W 20, etc..
What is the best one for this car in terms of the viscocity?

Also, this car swallow a lot of oil?
I seem to be getting the add 1 liter warning every once in a while (Every 2 o 3 months) and I have checked and there is no leak so i'm wondering if this is normal in these cars or is something wrong?

When I had my 06 525i I used Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5W-30. I changed my oil every 6-7K miles. Usually I would have to add some oil about midways between changes, every 3-4K miles, It would need about half qt.

Hope this helps, good luck!

If you are absolutely sure oil is not leaking from valve cover gasket or oil filter housing gasket or pan gasket, then oil is leaking in to engine and burning off.

How long have you had this car? When was the last oil change? How long have you been adding oil like this?

I have an 06 525 as well. I have been adding a litre of oil every 2-3 months or roughly every 1-3000km since late 2011. I have taken it to the dealer several times and also to independent BMW shops and none of them can locate any problems or leak.

The independent shop tells me that as the car gets old it does consume more oil and the best way to keep the engine in good condition is to do an oil change maximum every 10000km. So this is what I've done. It doesn't change the oil consumption though. I use Castrol Edge 0W-40.

The car has done 183,000km

Hope this helps

Use the Mobil1 5-30 extended performance. 3 of the 5-liter jugs cost you $75. OEM Oil filters are $11 so that's $95 for 2 oil changes w/filters. And you'll have a liter left over to top off twice. Works out perfect.

Change around 7500 mi.
Adding about a half liter of oil between oil changes is normal.
Been doing this for 12 years now and more bimmers than i can count on my hands. So take it from experience. Don't get caught up the type III type IV oil issue, marketing, and EU standards. The EP is the same as the OE BMW LL oil

+1 with what AchtungE60 said.

I'm currently running Mobil1 5/30 EP with my latest oil change. I might be changing to the Mobil1 5/30 High Mileage, I'm at 127k with my '06 530i.

For Mobil1 5/30 EP the best price is at Walmart, $27 for a 5qt jug. The M1 5/30 HM is $24 for a 5qt jug. i bought 6 Mann filters for less than $8 each, these include the two 'O' rings and the copper drain plug washer, just like the BMW filters.

I hope by being proactive with the oil changes it will help mitigate sludge build-up due to extended oil change intervals as recommended by BMW.

With respect to the oil consumption, my 2007 TIS states that for spark-ignition and diesel engines, the maximum engine oil consumption is 0.7L/1000km (roughly 0.7qt/620mi). For M engines its 1.5L/1000km.

Why aren't you guys using BMW LL-01 rated Castrol or Mobil 1? Is it due to the vehicle odometer or shorter oil change interval?
