Hi All,
I have a '04 520i (M54 engine) with 108k on the odometers. I always change my engine oil every 10k and regularly check the oil level the old fashioned way, using the Dipstick. I always check the engine oil before starting the car in the morning in my garage so I know I'd get an accurate reading.
The thing is recently the"Engine oil at minimum" warning is popping up on the iDrive, eventhough the dipstick check is ok (oil is at the correct level). I also checked there's no smoke in the tailpipe and no leaks anywhere on the engine.
Could it be that the engine oil sensor is bad? How do you check it?

Sounds like the oil temperature, low oil, oil condition sensor has gone bad. That part has a high failure rate. The sensor is located in the bottom of the oil pan and can be accessed during a oil change. After draining the oil, the 5 bolts securing the stiffener plate are removed from the subframe assembly. The oil sensor is held onto the oil pan by 3 nuts. I have the problem now on my 05 530i m54. I have purchased the OEM Hella part and will change out with next oil change. If you use a BMW compatable code reader or one of the laptop software packages, INPA, ISTA, etc you will get the fault code. Good luck.
conferm your part number in REALOEM.com
In the US, this is the oil level sensor. Probably the same for you, but confirm.
