Engine oil low @ 5000kms ?

My Ride: 525d LCI - xenon, tv function,grey dakota leather,titanium silver,244 radial spokes.
My LCI 525d is about 3 months old and clocked 5000kms. This morning the iDrive showed a "Low engine oil-add 1 litre" warning, i also checked it manually and the engine oil is very low.
Isn't it too early for the engine oil to get over at just 5000kms?
Also, what engine oil is best suited for the 525d?
