My typical driving distance is about 32 miles one way to work and then another 32 miles back home. This happens about 1 to 2 times a week. For short distance driving, I think it may be about 15 miles one way and then another 15 miles back home. I am not sure whether these count as short distances.

Thanks,

Ching-Ho Cheng

32 miles is not a short trip by any means.

Another possibility is you've started an oil leak and since there are belly pans on these cars, an oil leak can go undetected for a long time before it starts dripping on the floor. My E53 X5 was losing a litre every few hundred km and most of it was on the belly pan. I think most of it came off while I was driving, so it never made more than a quarter sized drop on the garage floor.

I will remove the undercover to check when next oil change come (it will be soon, less than few hundred miles to go).

I followed the instruction from the message to add 1 Qt back to engine. I have not driven the car yet. My co-worker's E90 always need to put in 1 quarter once a while and dealer could not find any oil leak under the engine. Another co-worker of mine has E60, 2006, same issue. He needs to put in 1 quart of oil once a while. He said that is typical ?

Any comment is appreciated.

Mine does that every once in a while but I have a leaky oil pan gasket. If you fill it a quart and the message does not go away, its the sensor or the wires. I had my mechanic look into mine and he said it looked like some rats chewed on the wires. He soldered them back together and all has been fine ever since.
