Ok the famous engine malfunction error has struck and ofcourse its like 20 degree outside. I get back from a nice long weekend in Mexico to come home and find my car buried in snow. No big deal its a German car and this snow is nothing, so I thought. After cleaning off the car I start her up and the idle is really rough and cuts off. So i'm thinking she's a bit cold and after days of freezing weather she just needed to get warmed up a bit. After a second start she starts up and is still rough and all the errors were comming up Engine malfunction-reduced power, the check engine light was blinking, reduced emmissions, check battery and others. I check the battery and checked the connections and they were fine. I had the battery replaced about 2 weeks ago so I know thats not the problem. Looking at other post It seems that it could be several issues but not sure what to do next. My car is out of warranty and I know this will be an expensive fix. To thoes who had this problem was the alternator fix the remedy or was it a combination of fixes. My car is a 2004 545i 11/03 build.

This happened 2 weeks ago after my IPOD controller install. if you search for a thread containing a bunch of curse words and IPOD and also the word Hobbit and Mutant, you will find it... however, i brought the car back to the dealer and they just reset my computer somehow and it was fixed... disconnect the battery or something??? it was just a computer malfunction. it said "Engine Malfunction, Reduced Power" if i recall correctly. Apparently the service guy didnt "reset" the comp after the IPOD install and software updates

I too have had this error [about a year ago], so I purchased a "Fault Code Reader/Reset Tool" (from bavauto.com) and reset it myself... no problems since. Just a glitch...
