I have had the same thing happen once, about half a year ago, never before, and never since. The car is full of sensors etc. i bet its a glitch somewhere, no worries, if it doesnt return. If the light returns, then probably some sensor has failed, diagnostics will help there.

swing by an autozone and have them pull the codes for you. I suspect that it has something to do with emission as you o2 sensors and all don't activate until you car reaching operating temp

I think my nearest "autozone" might be about 4,500 miles away

I'll give it a few more days, try filling up the gas tank, and if it doesn't finally go away I guess it's off to the BMW dealer

The emission monitoring is very sensitive, bad gas, a misfire or an O2 sensor reading a bit out of tolerance among other things can give you a hiccup.
This is the explanation he gave me too. How sensitive the emission monitoring is

I told the guy at BMW that someone on a forum told me already that it was probably the tank venting valve and he said "really? where? which forum? whoever it is might want to come and work here

We have a winner !! This is what my BMW dealer informed today that I need fixing. They're going to do it next week and it's covered by my warranty too
glad i could help mine required the car to stay overnight, but that was because they didn't have the part at the dealership

i had that same light come on it's the increased emissions light. it didn't show up in the i-drive but stayed on until the dealership looked at the car. they ended up replacing the tank venting valve and it hasn't came back since.

How strange is that. You're in America and can get the part overnight. I'm half an hour from Munich and he's saying hopefully we'll have it by Wednesday next week

The two great things are though, it's definitely that - so I can give the throttle pedal as much torture as I usually do until it's done, and it's going to be free to get done
