As I went to our garage to boot up our 520i, the message "Enginge fault" popped up on iDrive. The engine didn't run smoothly at all. It sounded more like some simple boat than a sophisticated BMW. According to the dealer something could be wrong with a coil, however, they were at best not able to take a look at it until monday morning.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Yes, I had experienced a similar problem on my 523i this evening, the engine fault light came on :'( The engine sounded like a boat when the rev hit 600-800rpm. I need to have it toll to the dealership service center.

I only had 9500km on my vehicle.

SUBJECT
N52 Engine Runs Poorly with Camshaft Sensor and VANOS Faults

MODEL
E60, E90 with the N52 engine produced from 3/05 through 6/05.

SITUATION
Vehicles equipped with the N52 engine may be difficult to start, run rough and have the "Service Engine Soon" light is illuminated.

Any of the following camshaft sensor or VANOS faults, as well as various misfire faults, may be stored in the MSV70 module.

2A9A
Cam sensor, inlet signal ? signal invalid for synchronization

2A98
Crankshaft-inlet camshaft, correlation- Value outside reference range

2A82
VANOS intake- stiff, jammed mechanically

2A9B
Cam sensor, exhaust signal ? signal invalid for synchronization

2A99
Crankshaft- exhaust camshaft, correlation- Value outside reference range

2A87
VANOS exhaust- stiff, jammed mechanically

CAUSE
VANOS solenoid valve is jammed or sticking.

CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only, perform the diagnosis and repair procedure as described below.

PROCEDURE
Remove the VANOS solenoid, intake or exhaust depending on the fault codes stored, and using shop air, gently blow out any visible particles and reinstall.

It is no longer necessary to replace the VANOS solenoid for these faults.

Reprogram the vehicle using CIP17.01 (Target data Status E89x-05-06-510), or higher for the E90 and Target data Status E060-05-06-500, or higher for the E60.

The modified MSV70 DME data contains additional VANOS solenoid activation logic to flush out any foreign particles.

WARRANTY
For the appropriate labor operations, please refer to the KSD system.

SUBJECT
Check Engine Lamp Illuminated and/or Vehicle Overheats

MODEL
E90 (3 Series) All Models, E60 (5 Series) All Models Equipped With N52 Engine.

SITUATION
The customer complains the Check Engine lamp is illuminated and/or the vehicle overheated. One or more of the following fault codes is stored in the DME.

FC 2E81 Electric coolant pump, speed deviation, speed outside the tolerance

FC 2E82 Electric coolant pump cutoff, over-current

FC 2E83 Electric coolant pump, power-reduced operation, dry run

FC 2E84 Electric coolant pump, communication

FC 2E85 Electric coolant pump, communication, no voltage at emergency operation input of pump

CAUSE
One the following can be the cause:

Insufficient Power Supply

Insufficient Grounding

BSD Signal not present

Defective Electric Coolant Water Pump

PROCEDURE

Measure the following at connector X6035 on the Electric Coolant Water Pump

Pin 1 (fuse F02) and Pin 4 Ground (X6455) = 12 volts

Pin 2 (fuse F09) and Pin 4 Ground (X6455) = 12 volts

Pin 3 BSD Signal (DME Pin 26) and Pin 4 ground (X6455) = 7.5 ?8.5 volts

If any of the above measurements are incorrect when tested, continue troubleshooting using the DIS Plus or GT1 to determine the source of problem.

If all of the above measurements are correct proceed to step 2.

Note: All measurements should be performed with battery charger connected to the vehicle.

Replace the Electric Coolant Water Pump (PN 11 51 7 546 994) in accordance with Repair Instruction RA 11 51 000.

After performing any service work requiring draining of the coolant. The system must be bled to ensure that there are no air pockets present. The system can be bled using the DISplus/GT-1 or by following a special procedure. To bleed the system follow the procedure described below.

Bleeding (Venting) Cooling System

Fill system with coolant via the expansion tank (AG. Top up coolant level to lower edge of expansion tank.

Close expansion tank.

Switch on ignition.

Set heating to maximum (temperature); switch on blower (lowest stage).

Press accelerator pedal module to floor for at least 10 seconds. The engine must NOT be started.

Bleeding via EWP takes approximately 12 minutes. Then check coolant level in expansion tank, top up to MAX marking if necessary.

Check cooling circuit and drain plugs for leaks.

If the procedure needs to be repeated several times, allow DME to completely de-energize (remove ignition key for app. 3 minutes) and then repeat procedure as from item 3.

Note: Always connect a battery charger while performing the bleeding process.

SUBJECT
Loss of Power or Intermittent Crank, No Start Situation

MODEL
E60 525i, 530i (5 Series) equipped with M54 engine

SITUATION
Customer complains the vehicle will intermittently hesitate or intermittently exhibits a crank, no start situation.

CAUSE
A voltage drop occurs between the Car Access System connector X10318, pin 7 and the Fuel Injector Relay connector X6327, pin 8 caused by an internally shorted Oil Condition Sensor (OEZS) located in the lower section of the oil sump. This condition is accompanied by the following fault codes being stored:

CAS FC A0C0 Terminal 15 output 3, signal fault or value above threshold

DME FC 27C3 Thermal oil level sensor signal dropped

PROCEDURE

Select "Control Unit Functions"

Select "Diagnosis Requests"

Select "Terminals"

Select "Voltage terminal 15-1", "Voltage terminal 15-2" and "Voltage terminal 15-3" in the far right column

Select "Display"

If the display does not indicate battery voltage for "Voltage terminal 15-3" then disconnect the Oil Condition Sensor connector X6254 and measure the voltage with the ignition switch turned to the Terminal 15 position. The voltage drop should be no longer present. Attempt to start the vehicle. If the vehicle starts replace the Oil Condition Sensor and install the Power Supply Retrofit Harness (PN 12 51 4 512 589) according to the installation instructions attached to this Service Information Bulletin.
