the M3 hood have 2 vents, the one on the driver side is open and connected to the air box and the one on the passenger side is close.

The piece on the M3 was probably damaged and the owner just took it off not knowing anything about it?

Have some other M3 owner check their hood.

I started the thread asking if it produces a better sound; not expecting any performance gains.

From my understanding, it serves more then a few purposes:

1. Sound suppressant
2. Protects the paint from heat
3. Fire blanket on the engine. The screws melt and the thing falls down on the engine and could help put out a fire. At least that was my understanding.
