Just noticed a loud "clicking" sound from the right side of the engine housing. Car only has 3800 mls. Dealer is looking it over now...anyone have a similiar problem? Searched the forum and couldn't find anything.

I have had the same issue on my 545i, if your looking at the engine with the hood up, it's on the right side, but if your in the car it's the left for me. But as far as the problem is for me, it comes and goes, it seems that if i push the car hard when I bring it back down to idle it starts a thumping/ticking sound. If I drive casually it doesn't do it, because I brought it into the dealership and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with the engine or tranny. Let me know what you find out.

Do a search on "ticking" and you'll get:

Can be a serious problem.

BMW replaced my engine a few months ago for the same issue. They sent a Rep from Munich to check it out along with a number of other issues. In my opinion the car should have been replaced but evidentlly and obviously not with them.. I had abour 19K on the engine when the switch was made. Good luck!

Dealer predictably said is was "normal" and it seems to have dramatically decreased in volume, so I'm in monitoring mode now.

thanks for the links above, didn't think to search "ticking" as well as "clicking" Most of those issues seem to be with the 8 cyl though...
