engine change
Hi all,
Short summary: my car is 525i (N52B25 engine) after the first oil change at 22.000 km in Jan 2007, I noticed increased oil consumption (also posted here some questions some time ago on this topic). Drove to the dealer several times before the end of warranty (april 2007) who told me not to worry and always added 1L of oil for free (which is not standard here in Europe/belgium). Message to add started to apper more often - last time after driving 900 km ... so I took it again to the dealer (June 2008 with 36.000 km) who finally agreed to inspect the engine. I was first told that cylinder cover (not sure which part it is) has to be replaced. after one week of waiting for the car I phoned dealer again to see when will i get my car back ... and i found-out that dealer have contacted bmw, who asked to take certain measurements on the engine - dealer said that maybe the engine will be replaced by bmw ... fingers crossed as the car is out of warranty for more than a year ... I hope they will change it rather than repair.
One interesting thing I started to notice - technician who took my car for repair looked at the exhaust pipe - and it was black and not only black but also covered with some layer of black dirt - he told me that is because burned engine oil (I had no oil leaks on the garage floor) I never looked at my exhaust pipe before ... now i notice on other cars that even some diesel engine has cleaner pipes .... so if you noticed increased oil consumption and exhaust pipe is not only black but also covered with the black layer of dirt - ask advice from your dealer.

Wow! Without any war between you and the dealer! This sounds good. Fingers crossed here too for the new engine, but the most important thing is that you get your car back healthy

I hope to get ir back soon too
Each time I came to the dealer I explained the receptionist the problem, several times I had it all written down for the technicians - so the dealer is well aware that I noticed the problem before the end of warranty period ... the question now is whether dealer agrees with engine change or whether dealer repairs the engine at their own costs - otherwise I will address BMW myself, go to the consumer protection office and court if needed ... which i do not really want to do ...

update: took the car back today. as the dealer said - 'half of the engine is changed' meaning they did not change entire engine, but rather repaired it. was not asked to pay anything for it (so far). however, they managed to damage the front left side of the car - other car hit it while in dealer's shop ... damn it ... i am really not very lucky with this bmw (which is already my 4th bmw, but the first bought new ...)
