Electric water pump...so do we still have a mechanical 'thermostat

I understand that our cars have an electric water pump. So I assume we now use a temperature signal from the computer to tell the pump when to turn ON. So does that mean we no longer have the old mechanical thermostat that stays closed until the water temp is high, then opens (unless it sticks closed) to allow water circulation? I hope so, because those old thermostats were a major source of serious problems for older BMWs...overheating, cracked heads, etc.l
