I am new to this forum as i just purchased a BM 525 2005 model and need help from all you clever people here with great knowledge.

My 525 has standard head lamps, but i just changed them to the xenon headlamps (original bmw part) but when i switch the car on the idrive says dipped beam failure left/right. Basically the main xenon spot light does not come on at all.

Does the car need to be reprogrammed and or do i need to get some different parts to get these working.....i thought it would be plug n play but its not

I would appreciate any help if poss.....thanks

Changes like this must be done with the BMW dealer only.

It's like buying cheap wheels with some stupid Hub Fit Rings...

The cheapest way to make tuning, if you do not really understand BMW Hi Tech,
is to buy it from the dealers.

A E60 is not like a F-10 truck from the '80's...

Buy cheap - pay twice the double

Do, PLEASE, read this sites writings and Search before you do these, so basic, so stupid things...

Xenon's is not a simple plug and play, you will probably need a new lighting module and a wiring harness.

I am thinking about doing a retrofit, but being very cautious about what is all required.

If you do a search you will find lots of threads

You have to take to dealer to get reprogramed. It should work after that.

I know that at least one person on this forum has been able to do this retrofit.......without the need to have the dealer re-program anything. I had bought a pair of Euro Xenon's because I wanted the clear side markers, but they turned out not to be adaptive....so I couldn't use them. Member Busta bought these Xenons from me and replaced his halogens with them. According to him it was a lot of hard work but he got it to work. Read his thread in the following link and then contact him for the details of how to do it.

You need to make a few internal wiring changes to the headlight and add an extra earth for the xenon ballast, thats all, done it to mine and are plug and play with no warning lights, programing etc works like oem

So you never had to replace the lighting module?
I know about the earth issue but what was the minor mods to the headlamp wiring?

because halogens use two 5W angeleye bulbs and xenons use one 10W bulb you need to splice the the green and the gray wire together on the xenon headlight. On the xenon headlight the green wire is used for the bixenon shutter function which is disabled with my my xenons but who cares. Can activate it by taking power from the high beam bulb but I didnt bother. The gray wire powers the angeleye. Then to stop warning lights for dipped beam I added a 4700uf 35v capacitor in parallel with the dipped beam which smooths the power to the ballast and fools the lcm in thinking theres a bulb there. Used mine for 6 months with no issues.
