If you want to replace the filter you will have to buy a new pan. the filter is built into the pan plus it is now made of plastic and once removed it will never seal properly. From the techs that I have spoken with, the pan is broken almost everytime they remove it. They also said that if you elect to change your fluid, they will make you purchase the new pan no matter what. If your a CCA member you get 10% of the pan

Guys, give me a few days. I am waiting on good weather to do this. I have everything and will be able to answer all questions. We will know exactly how many liters are needed. I should have it done sometime this week.
As far as changing the filter/pan, if you don't change it, you will always have some oil left in the pan. Additionally, the filter will still have all the dirt stuck to it.
It's like changing your oil, would you change it without changing the filter?

one thing to keep in mind, you'll have to raise the car evenly(level), and top off the trans fluid while the car is running.
Gotta raise the car level, loosen fill to make sure, open drain, drop pan, install new pan, fill new fluid, close the fill plug, turn the car on, run it thru gears, let the oil temp get to 100deg F (approx 5 mins), open the fill, top it off!

One ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Now... should I really change the tranny fluid on my 2004 530i after 6 years and 80,000 miles?
