E60 was originally supposed to come with LED. From the US E60 dealer training materials, pre-launch:
I converted all lamps (brake/park/turn, front and rear) to LED, using extremely high brightness LED retrofits. I had tried other retrofits with limited success, and have been working on this for a while now. I finally found a combination of excellent appearance, and enough brightness and light output.

Make *sure* you're looking at post #40, because there were a couple of other posts by me with different LED retrofits that weren't nearly as good. Actually, I think it even looks better than the results on some BMW models where LEDs are stock.

Ya then they decided they needed to save it so they had somting to upgrade to during the facelift. SUCKS!
