Okay so I'm still getting used to my 06 530i, but today as I was driving to work I went over some rail road tracks at like 40mph, and I heard a loud thud. Do you think I damaged something or just bottomed out the suspension? I know with the big wheels and suspension, I need to be careful to not bend the rims, but how do you all deal with railroad tracks, dips and bumps in the road? What should I check for damage?

These cars are pretty well protected from beneath. I imagine you just dragged a bit. I'd just look underneath and see if anything is leaking. If it still tracks straight, it's probably fine. I just try to slow down as much as possible when approaching unavoidable tracks, dips, etc. Not much else you can do.

Just your RF's tires banging, it sounds like it hits something.

But 40 mph is way too fast over railway tracks, anyway.

Did you order the non-RF's yet?

Okay I think the car is alright. I was just following traffic and the car in front of me was going 35-40 mph so I just followed along!

I think I'm going to wait until the RFTs are worn down and then replace them with non-RFTs. Since the car is certified pre-owned, they put on 2 brand new RFT tires before selling it. I would hate to waste them.

I took the car to a BMW/Mercedes independent mechanic (a few days ago) that my dad has used many times for his old school Mercedes. He looked at the bottom of the car and noticed that the front bumper or air dam was repainted from the underside. He says it was probably a scrape. This car is a lease return.

I think these tracks (no longer in active use) were especially bad since I think I've gone over a couple of other ones before with no problem at around 40mph.

Just like potholes, not all railroad tracks are created equal -

40 mph over RR tracks? Did you get air?

Probably just bottomed the suspension.

good that you didn't damage anything - the car has got protection. but there was a possibility you could bend the rims. it happpened to me twice. need to be carfull with sport package and low profile...you will feel it right away though - if the wheel bend, it's unbalanced and it will shake on 60 mph so most likely you ok..

and, by the way change from runflats and you will feel big difference. it worth it and you could sell your RFT's if they are still good after. I changed mine for Pirellis (not the most expensive kind - $800 for 4) and it feels sooo much better.

and 124s are not the best quality rims. I've had one cracked and one bend. for the last 6 month
