The software (ROGMAN/CIP) update cannot physically damage any component that it is updating. The person/dealer you talked to just doesn't want to do it (probably because they are not capable). What usually happens is that one of the components fails to update. When this happens the update must be restarted and/or each component must be updated individually if not the component may not work or work completely...
My update took nearly 24 hours with several failures - but the dealer kept at it until all the components updated successfully.

The dealer did a full upgrade on mine after I complained of rough idle on cold start-ups. They volunteered, plus it was when it was still under warranty. They attempted 3 times, which was 7-8 hours each, and each of those times the active steering module failed. After the 3rd attempt they replaced the AS module, then ran the update again, which finally completed after another 7-8 hours.
Just glad it was under warranty....you imagine 21+ hours for labor

Only time I had my software updated was August 2007 per the TCU recall, and one thing I noticed when I picked up my car was the Low Battery warning light. Apparently they do the update on battery power alone? Anyway, I turned the key and it started fine, and I have not had any battery issues since.

How about performance loss? A German guy from my local CCA told me he use to work for bmw in Germany, and that a full US software update weakens performance over the original German tune. Not sure if there is any truth in it, but mine did feel a tad slower after the full update
