I think my car was built in June 2004.? Not sure when it was delivered.? The first owner bought it in Aug 2004.? Does that help?

If it was built in June 2004, and didn't get any SW-updates since then, you might have a number of issues. Look at the attached file and see if you can identify one or several of them. A very common one is the window anti trap function (making the power window difficult to close at some occasions). Another one is the steptronic harsh downshift.

Hence, at best I would have to pay 170GBP. At worst a software upgrade would cost me 1020GBP!!! I argued with them that they don't need to be working on the car during the upgrade as it can be done overnight but they still insisted that they would charge for the number of hours the software upgrade actually took, regardless of whether a mechanic was at the car or not.

That's a ridiculous amount of money.

Thanks stafli. I am encountering several problems on this list:
1) Rattling noise from steering when vehicle is unlocked or ignition is turned on. AFS is affected.
2) I think I do have the hard downshift problem
3) Once automatic headlamps switch on after entering tunnel, it doesn't switch off after I leave the tunnel.

So with these problems will the dealer provide me with the free upgrades to the latest CIP?

They should. Do a search, somewhere on this forum is the actual BMW bulliten about the hard downshift. I printed it out and brought it to my service guy. Update was done with no questions asked. Don't just describe what's happening and hope they can replicate it in the shop. Good luck!

Here's the link. Read down and you'll the SIB number quoted, that is the bulliten that the service guy can look up...

Thanks for the suggestion. My main concern is that rattling noise from the steering system...gave me the chills.

Taz, maybe you can try finding some problems from that list also and get a free upgrade that way.

I'll let everyone know what happens. Thanks again.
