Good point. The LED lights used as DRLs on the new cars like Audis and Mercedes are brighter, and can potentially be more blinding than most "regular" foglights I've seen.
But they are DRLs and as such dont project light out in the same way a lamp with a reflector or projector does. They are no different to the Halos on BMWs.

Personally I like DRLs on cars(oem fitted ones anyway) and think fogs look crap unless its foggy.

hinckley, I am 45 and was a member of the fog light only club. I have to admit though, it started with my 1977 Camaro when we installed white fog lights. Back then, around 1983, when I got the 77 Camaro, white fogs were very much a laugh because the popular fogs were yellowish. I was way ahead of my friends and already thinking European. It was very cool and common to cruise around, day or night with fogs only and hope the police didnt see you.

I lived in Kansas City and one of my well to do friends, lived in St Louis. He just bought a 1984 BMW 325i two door. It had white fogs too and that very car was my first introduction to BMW. After I drove that car I swore on German cars. I went from Camaro to Scirocco, until eventually years later I was doing well enough to buy my own BMW. Every since its been BMW, Porsche or Mercedes.

My last BMW where I think remembering being able to use fogs only was my E34 1995 540i. Anyone that had an E34 will remember how vulnerable the fogs were to rocks from the roadway. Great reminder hinckley, thanks

This thread is great. I actually drive with fogs only at night, (not all the time), just because I love the look and I can still see fine. I get flashed sometimes and just chuckle.

When I'm out driving right before sundown (and when I remember), I like driving with Angel Eyes and fogs only.. but before it gets dark I always make sure headlights are on..

The 'certain chilly German' (I love that ) hates the desease called Audi.

It's true that they have those freakin' LED's that IMHO look UGLY.
The difference in between those and the fogs are, they are not blinding any oncoming driver since they are too high and aiming a little different than fogs.
Have you seen the 2010 S-class -- and probably other newer M-B models? They have LED DRLs that also look kind of ugly...

I see lots of the new 2010 S Class in Manhattan. The rich seem to be buying them like hotcakes -- recession or not. I actually think that the 2010 S Class's lights are a little too blinged out for that type of car. Seem a bit too boy racer/aggressive for the kind of car that it is IMHO.

We love - and miss - you, Ice.

Really - really - not to bring back this subject, but I've never understood why you thought fog lights were aimed high and blinded oncoming drivers. I thought their purpose was to be down low to illuminate the road just ahead of the driver. In any case, with the advent of HID lights, I think that fog lights are now superfluous.

btw, it's probably a throw back to the 80s for me, but I do have a bit of boy racer in me and like many of the Audi LED DRL designs. I also have them on my 09 911 and think they look great.

I personally think the new LEDs on the Audi's are too "busy". One side goes off when the blinkers are used on that side and then comes back on after the blinkers go off.

As for the fogs, I never used to use them UNTIL I got the HID fogs from John! Now I occasionally do.
