Exclamation

Many of the newbies may not get the reference, but a number of years back, there was a robust discussion about driving with only foglights illuminated (as could be done on pre-E60 5ers). At least one of our celebrated members objected to the practice somewhat vigorously, while others like me remembered the yuppie 80s and 90s when driving BMWs with only foglights was somewhat of a (obnoxious) statement in the US.

Well last week I was traveling for the holidays and passed an Audi driving in the other direction with its new-fangled LED driving lights. Directly behind it was an E39 with its foglights on,
but - you guessed it - no headlights. After a smile and a chuckle, I thought the obvious - what's the difference? Weren't we obnoxious yuppies just 25 years ahead of the Germans when it comes to safe driving?

Any old-timer comments? How about a certain chilly German?

Good point. The LED lights used as DRLs on the new cars like Audis and Mercedes are brighter, and can potentially be more blinding than most "regular" foglights I've seen.

I was hoping I could still relate or understand this post from the title... I was wrong, too young I guess .

Interested to see where this goes though and hopefully I can learn a little more about this fog-light-only driving.

The 'certain chilly German' (I love that ) hates the desease called Audi.

It's true that they have those freakin' LED's that IMHO look UGLY.
The difference in between those and the fogs are, they are not blinding any oncoming driver since they are too high and aiming a little different than fogs.

I drive with my hid fogs/angel eyes around the time it gets dark. I don't drive at night without headlights though. And honestly I love the way the audi led's look or the porsche led strip.
