My Ride: BMW E60 LCI 535xi Manual Transmission
Question E60 LCI x-Drive - Stickshift gearknob shaking while driving in the snow.. (VIDEO)

Hi Guys,

I have noticed this problem several months ago (but until today was that I decided to record a small video and ask for help).

Basically, when I am driving in the snow, and I start the car on 1st gear quickly (to make the wheels spin on purpose on the snow), the gearknow shakes in my opinion a LOT.

This happens when the car loses traction (Easier to replicate in the snow) and I try to either:
- Brake hard making ABS kick in.
- Start moving fast on 1st gear, making DSC kick in to stabilize.
- On 2nd gear I also made it happen, but just driving uphill in a snowy road and pushung the gas pedal all the way and making the engine accelerate quick enough to lose traction.

I talked to my mechanic a while ago (he hasn't seen this video), and he checked the car. He says he doesn't see anything wrong (He checked the transmission mount at my request). I had him replace the engine mounts about 8 months ago, because when braking really hard when driving slow (between 10-15mph), I heard and felt a loud hitting sound towards the front of the car.

I still think there's something wrong, since when the car shakes as seen in the video below, I feel something is loose somewhere in the powertrain. It doesn't feel tight and nice as i think is supposed to.

Any thoughts would be helpful. At least want to know what is it to see if I want to fix it or not (based on the cost),

Thank you!

Either loose parts in the shifter console, or worn transmission and/or engine mounts.

Or it's normal. Can't really comment since mine's auto.

I also thought that if my car had an automatic transmission, I wouldn't have noticed.. This might be just normal... but wanted to check. As far as the engine mounts, that shouldn't be, because as I said, I replaced those mounts a few months ago.

Any one that has a manual transmission and had the chance to do some hard driving in the snow?

Transmission and /or engine mounts.

Flywheel is a possibility too, but the other two are easier and cheaper to check.

I doubt is the engine mounts, since I have noticed this even before replacing the engine mounts less than a year ago. Anyone with a manual transmission that can chime in?
