Sorry to hear what happened to you MatyB.

You can always get a cheaper car with better cup holders

I know they suck but remember, bmw is pretty new to that technology. They just started putting those on their cars in early 90's where US made cars probably had them as early as 70's. I've had few German automobiles and noticed one thing, half of them weren't even equipped with one and the other half needed aftermarket one anyway because the one that came with the car sucked.
I think this guy may be a BMW cup holder designer

I'd rather not have cup holders in the car they spoil the lines of the dash open or closed, designers should spend the time on designing cars. The person that designed these was probably a design intern! I'd fire the guy that approved their addition to the car not the designer.

If you really need a drink in the car...stop and take a break!!!

BMW sells OEM coffee/travel cups. I bet you that they might claim the cup holders only work with those.

Your friend sucks!

Considering the design of the center console, where else would cupholders go in the car? I think the guy did a good job, based on what he had to work with. Just IMO.

You know, he does. You are right.

I got it fixed for free so perhaps BMW is at least a little sympathetic to the issue.

I gotta say, of all things about these cars people complain about, this is one that isn't even on my radar. I realize, however, that some people have long commutes, so yeah, they could be better. I simply never use mine in normal, everyday driving. I've had my car for about 16 months and maybe have used them to hold a capped water bottle on a road trip five or six times. All I want is a decent, handy place to put my sunglasses so they won't slide around at night. Again, no biggie.

No open bottles of alcohol beverages allowed in cars in US (at least in Michigan)!

In Finland that's not a problem.

I agree completely. I never use them as I don't allow any food or drink (besides water with a cap) in my car. My cupholders don't even line up staright in the dash and it bugs me...things like that bother me, THAT'S why I bought a BMW...I like the small things done right...which is why these cupholders are piss'n me off...
