It's normal. I just push the clutch in when I stop the engine. My E90 3'er made the same rattle until I read in an online forum to push the clutch in. You do realize the e-brakes can fail. In my work garage we've had a few creep out into the traffic lanes.

If it was normal wouldnt ALL e60s with same transmition do this, not just a few? I am not sure I can accept that a $50,000 BMW can make gear rattle noises like that and be considered "normal"...

I have a 2008 535 delivered 8/08 with 3100 miles on it now.

It has made that "rattle" since the beginning, on and off.

I'd say just press the clutch in.

It's the light weight flywheel. You might be able to replace it with a heavier one.

Explaination of noise:

Link

Every stock manual BMW I've ever heard or driven has had some sort of gear rattle due to the flywheel construction depending on outside temp, transmission temp, slop, and clutch wear.

Thanks ObD! That makes more sense now.
