I took my 05 530i in to get some things fixed (48k mileage) under warranty before it expires.

One problem is when I turn off the engine, sometimes I hear a quick rattling sound (almost sounds like fan blades hitting something) coming from under the car. The sound only lasts for a second or so, but it is audible and sounds ghetto.

The dealer tells me this is "normal" on manual transmition cars like mine. They say it is a "gear rattle" noise, and if I engage the clutch when turning off motor it shouldnt happen. I don't know about you, but I don't think a 50k car should be making "gear ratteling" noises and accepted as normal operation with no fix from the dealer.

Please advise. Thanks!!

WOW! I have the exact same problem with my 530i, which is also a manual transmission and it started about 6 months ago.. I currently have 32k miles, so it could be just a gear rattling but I never had this problem when I first got the car, It makes a shuddering noise right after I turn of the engine.

Exactly! I want this fixed and I don't care if they have to replace the whole tranny! What do you guys think, is this acceptable for the dealer NOT to fix under warranty???

Yea, I really hate this noise too. It makes the car sound like the engine is dying. The Dealer wouldn't fix this problem when I asked them too, so I am going to take it to my friends shop soon, and ask him to check it out, will keep you posted.

That sounds nasty! Have them check it to make sure! Perhaps remind them that if there's a problem
in the near future and it gets traced back to this, they'll have to pay for replacing it! heheheh

I did have them check, they are trying to tell me it is normal to have a BMW make GEAR RATTLE noise when turning the car off without clutch engaged.

What should I do if they continue to refuse to fix this?

If you depress the clutch when shutting off the engine does the noise go away?

They SAY if you press the clutch in when turning off the engin noise goes away. I use ebrake, I don't leave car in gear, so my clutch is not pressed in when i turn off motor.

It's normal. I just push the clutch in when I stop the engine. My E90 3'er made the same rattle until I read in an online forum to push the clutch in. You do realize the e-brakes can fail. In my work garage we've had a few creep out into the traffic lanes.
