Actually, I think the M5 only has 8 ft/lb more torque and it occurs 400 RPM higher than the e60. So around town the E60 should be at least if not more torquey than the M5.
My issue with the 2003 M5s are that they still command a good buck (much much more than say a 2000/2001) and they eat clutches for breakfast. Still a great car.

The E39 was nice in its time.... but that time is over now.
It's all about the Bangle design.
I don't care what anyone says.... the E60 is the SICKEST looking 5 series ever.

If you're a driver, you should opt for the E39 M5 because of its sportier ride and handling (my 545 sport feels like jello), it sounds better, and it has more aftermarket mods available.
The 550 is more on the comfortable cruiser side.

I think there hasnt been 1 person that suggested the E39 M5 man...
After all.. its www.e60.net right? hahaha..![Smile](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/smile.gif)
Btw: I think the difference between the 550i and the M5 is not substantial enough to make me buy an older car..

Unless if one could walk out the dealer with a mint M5 after spending less than $40K.

I've been researching the same, altho I'm in a 525i and not a 545/550. It would be a huge jump in performance in my situtation. My friend has a e39 M5, imo I say go for the M5...it's a beast.

The money issue is something only you can work out, but my advice would be to go drive....extensively....a 550. I think if you got a manual tranny with the 550 and sport pack.......you would be grinning non stop!! I can't imagine what I would do on the open road with any more power than what the 550 provides. Of course, you have to factor in the cost of speeding tickets to which ever way you go

A vote from the minority here.
I owned a 2004 545i/6/sport and traded it for my 2001 M5. The M5 was a few thousand cheaper, but that wasn't the motivating factor (especially since my insurance premiums went up and I bought an aftermarket warranty). The M is just a much more exciting car, with all the amenities you'll need and nothing you don't. In sport mode, the throttle response (combined with heavier steering) makes it hard to believe you're driving a 2-ton sedan. My E60 had plenty of power, but there is a noticeable difference from the M5.
Regarding the styling, it all depends on personal taste. I was ok with the E60, but prefer the E39. I think the interior still looks very modern, but it's not as cutting-edge as the E60. And, the E39 M5 has lots of nice little amenities (illuminated shiftknob, alcantara headliner, widscreen NAV, M badges/logos everywhere) which make you feel very special in the driver's seat.
Once the prices for used E60 M5s come down, I'm sure I'll be getting one. For now, I couldn't be happier with my "old" M.
