I had this problem on my M54 engine. I had the tube / valve replaced and decided NOT to replace the secondary air pump at all. It does whine on cold starts for about 5-10 seconds and I could care less. It hasn't failed yet and I won't replace it until it does. Even then, I don't need it unless I HAVE to pass emissions.

Funny thing about the loud noise on start, too.... My friend was like, "dude, what is that?" I said, "oh, it's the supercharger winding up." His reply, "wow, that is badass!"

I really had to hold back from laughing.

I've been having this problem for the last few months. Everything was replaced, car runs fine. So I'm guessing there is a loose connection to the pump? Difficulty for checking this?

Its not too difficult but you have to disconnect a lot of connectors before you can get to the pump. Give yourself 4 to 5 hours if this is your first time

What exactly was the sound like? I have a sound that kinda sounds like a ticking lifter and disappears after about 5 seconds on my z4. Although i plugged it back in Im still getting the code. kinda weird. Maybe it will go in time. I went outside and took a vid of my sound. Let me know what yours sounds/sounded like.

My code is p0492. The 1st post by the guy named the newbie has a 1 at the end. I'm gussing one is right and the other left. But wich one. Before I got the code checked I looked at my pcv and the left side was ripped. Then when I felt proud of the easy fix I got kicked in the balls with a unrelated code.

Would anyone happen to have the part numbers for the needed plastic hoses and a price?

When removing the intake to fix this problem can the gaskets be re-used?
