They probably have found what caused it (I've been told that this caused the issue).
A part in the filter housing has been missing, this gave the filter to move or it was able to be crooked installed.
Eitherway it caused damage on the filter with the results that we will have to find.
For now it is insurance work, experts will have to take a look and the car will be at the shop for the next couple of weeks.

My suspicion, on the missing piece is item number 2 on the attached web page for REAL OEM.
RealOEM.com - Online BMW Parts Catalog
The independent BMW shop that changed your oil should have spotted this during the oil change and replaced the missing "supporting dome". Hopefully it is their insurance company that is reviewing this.
Good luck!

Exactly. That part has been missing, no clue where it is.
But as you said, they should have spotted this. Ain't expensive to replace (So I have been told) and rather easy to replace, or at least spared a lot of troubles and possible damage.

My Ride: 2005 545i SMG with many, many options. More than my '17 C300 sadly....
That missing part should have been caught during the service. Unless the person who did the service has no clue about cartridge style oil filters, that missing part should have been a GIANT red flag. I bet it came out with the old oil filter. If you could find the old oil filter, I would check it for that missing part. This DEFINITELY should be paid for by the shop who did the service.

A garage did the change. Currently the car is at an other garage waiting for an insurance expert to take a look at it. He will probably come over today and give his "opinion" later on this week.
Basically, need to wait an other week before repairs (if needed) can start

For now we have the "approval" to dismount step by step.
When the part has been dismounted, consult with the expert and explain to him what has been found.
This will probably take a while, have no clue how long but i'm afraid of 1-2 months.

Help me understand. A insurance company has, approved/authorized, a 3rd party shop to disassemble/examine the engine. Is this insurance company yours or the shop that preformed the last oil/filter fluid change?

The insurance company of the garage that has changed the oil and filter has aproved the work.
Thats a smaller garage, they don't have the tools to disassemble the engine, thats why the car is at an other garage.

Thank you for your reply. I'm pleased to see the repair shop appears to be taking responsibility for the damages. Here in the states, I suspect, most shops would run the other way, leaving you holding your hat... It's reassuring to see a company take responsibility for the actions of their employees.
Good luck with a proper resolution and do keep up posted.
