E60 540 engine oil cooler
Hi guys i have a 2006 540 v8 auto engine oil low warning came on and found pool oil under car on taking of inspection cover found engine oil dripping out of bottom of radiator housing when engine running so im thinking only thing that has engine oil in that area would be the black oil cooler rad, that is attatched to front of the coolant rad. there are no visible sighns of a leak from front of oil cooler rad so im thinking maybe o ring coupling etc . anyway do i need to remove whole coolanf rad and associated items to see where oil leak is coming from or is there a simpler way to get inside and check seals or couplings etc
Any help greatly appreciated guys ?

06 540??? Should I be confused??
Regarding your issue, check the oil switch which is near the water pump under one of the radiator hoses... its tough to get too so grab a mirror and you may be able to see the leak. Or jack up your car and remove the shields - you will get a better view from underneath.

in the uk the succsessor to the e60 545 was the 4.0 litre v8 n62 engine as in my post the shields were taken off oil leaks seems to be emminating from the rad pack and only thing carries engine oil in that area ie not near engine is the oil cooler attatched to the main coolant rad !! the rad you see when looking through front grill is said oil rad the coolant rad is behind with fan attached to back of it !! any more suggestions guys as im still thinking o ring coupling to engine oil cooler ?

Ahhhhhhhhhhh...... thanks for schooling me on this one... after I posted I went to BMWUSA.com and couldnt find the model there either. Now I know why!
Good luck with your issue!

got the tools out and removed rad pack this morning fairly straight forward ,the engine oil cooler actually is the one that sits in the plastic fan housing not the one that sits in front of the coolant rad from the front ,was hoping it was just the o rings but it wasnt the actual engine oil cooler had failed "bummer" as o ring cost £2.06p uk the cooler is £400 plus well at least i saved on the labour charge and have learnt something aswell .
