Well, bear in mind that torque at the wheel is probably relatively constant for a given maximum engine power, as a Diesel (or V8) gearing will be taller than for a smaller/petrol engine, so acceleration will not necessarily be that different. But input torque to the gear box WILL be different depending on engine characteristics.
Sorry to sound like smart ass, but I was talking engine hp as Better Make Way talked power/torq at the clutch and in gearbox. Then if we start to talk power/torq in rear diff and wheel, comes that gearing thing. Daf/Volvo 66 and almost all snow scooters have variators, which help to put peak power through power line at all speeds. Trick is that variator is totally linear "gearbox".

I think that if we calculate torq and hp at the wheels both 530i and 530d at the few points in the speed range, with optimum gear, we can get same values. Probably...

So after all I agree.

Back to the topic.

I think that BMW think that it's not worth to make 535d with manual. How many would be sold?

Maybe Tremec T45 can be fitted? Can cope in Shelby 500.

I'm sure a third party manual gearbox for 700 Nm+ can be found. Whether it's worth the while (for both parties) of going through mutual certification, negotiations and customisation, I doubt. I don't think there is demand for much more than a couple of thousands of units a year.

(Based on some assumptions:

Worldwide sales of 60,000 E60 outside US
Of which 50% diesel (probably high - UK is 60%) = 30,000
Of which 15% 535d (based on UK AUC)= 4,500
Of which 25% manual (based on UK AUC all models except 535d) = 1,100)

OT: any snow where you are? Or is it a strangely warm autumn in Finland as well?

We are at the moment looking totally black ground. Raining, about +2 to +7 and bithc black. It's about 10 deg above long term average. Global warming?

All they need to do is fit little steering wheel paddles and sort out the drivetrain shunt/hesitation issue around walking speeds....sorted!

Probably...also here the temperature is way above the normal average and we stoped having proper winters for a few years now. Here now it's +5 at night and +15 daytime.
And i think you meant pitch black , cuz we also get days with black bitches...pardon

My 535d is 210g/km.

550i manual is 267g/km - just under a pound of CO2 per mile (look under Fuel consumption (Metric)/CO2 emissions (g/km))
