Exclamation E60 520D Dead spot before Turbo spools

Hi All,

I've never driven anyone else's BMW so its hard for me to assess whether or not there is a problem with my car but at present i believe that there is.

My car produces very little power before the turbo kicks in at around 2000 revs. This is especially noticeable when in third gear traveling at around 20mph.

Now i know that this is understandable as the turbo hasn't kicked in at that point but my car comes close to stalling at this point. the revs are around 1.1k and the car starts juddering.

The reason why i think there is something wrong with this car is because my friend's E46 320d can easily handle 20mph in the third gear. In fact, all of the cars i have driven in my life (petrol/diesel, turbo/non-turbo) can handle 20mph in the third gear.

Once the turbo gets going its very obvious but it doesnt produce that boost feeling a 320d E90 would give you at the same point. Maybe this is just becuase the 5 is heavier but i do beleive that there is a problem with my car before the turbo kicks in.

Does anyone else have this problem?
Does anyone else who owns an E60 experience the car struggling to cope with 20mph in the thir gear?
Any suggestions as to what to fix?

Thanks

Sorry, i thought my car details would show up in my signature but clearly it didn't. I have a 57 plate 520d the 163 bhp version.
