I, like the author of the long Bimmerfest review, also had the E39 2003 540i Sport with all of the M Tech goodies. Now I have the 2009 550i Sport.
On balance, my 550 is a far superior car to my E39 540. My 550 is a much more tenacious handler (that it, it has more grip in the twisties), its interior and seats are of far higher quality and comfort than the 540 (the 540's "sport seats" felt like two iron maidens compared to my 550's comfort seats), the electronics and stereo system in the 550 (I have Logic7) are far superior to those in the 540 (I had the upgraded "DSP" sound system -- which was a piece of garbage -- and the 540's electronics were stone age level).
My 550 has dramaticially greater highway passing power than my 540 and has more interior and trunk room.
But there are things about my 540 that I really do miss. First and foremost, the 540's V8 engine had much more low end power and the throttle response was instantaneous. When you stepped on the gas in the 540, you felt like you were being shot out of a cannon. Not so in the 550. The 550's throttle delay is maddening and the engine is totally gutless at low RPMs. I also felt more connected to the road in the 540 than I do in the 550.
Overall, the 550 is the better car. But my 540 was as much, if not more, fun to drive. I still miss it but I would not give up my 550 for one.

it's opinion. those who think e39 is better can keep theirs and who think the e60 is better can get the e60.
Let's see how many e60s sold vs. e39. :-) Let the numbers speak...
thanks!

The numbers will hardly be accurate since all kinds of variables have to be considered.
Unemployment rate, world economic situation to name a few.

People are resistant to change and are mad they can't afford the E60 is my guess.
But there are people who really prefer the older/more boxy BMW designs. For instance, I have always loved the E46 design myself, but I also find the E90 design very well done and has proven itself in the market.

I'll be the first to admit to not caring for the E60 for about the first 18 months it was out. But after a couple years, it really grew on me. I know that Bangle caught a lot of crap for saying that people would eventually appreciate the E60. But in hindsight, I think he was absolutely right. He must've been right, as I just placed an order for a 2010!
That said, I have to admit to never caring for the E39. I always found it really bland and boring, like BMW had run out of ideas.

Thanks for your 2 cents, but I am not going to "let the numbers speak" on this one, nor do I really care who likes what care better, but it is interesting to see peoples points of view.

I had both and love both. I'm still a very big fan of the E39 M5. One of my favorite cars of all time.

I guess you could say some of us will be in the same position next fall when they release the F10!
"I hate the F10 design, the E60 is so much better...etc.."
that may be the case...and some will flip their E60s and become members of F10.net and never look back!
If you just bought a 2009 or 2010 E60 you'll have a "dated" looking car not even a year into your purchase which means you probably won't move to the F10 right away and a couple or few years into the purchase the car still hasn't been "amortized" so you'll keep it with what might be a slight bit of annoyance towards the redesigned 5series?
Maybe not...just an opinion!

i think the e60 styling will stand the test of time. at least another 4-5 years.
