Just out of interest what about an e39 M5 vs an e60 M5 in P400?

Speaking from experience....
the E39 M5 would be faster than the 550.....I had multiple runs in my M5 in the 4.6 range and I don't think a 550 can come close to that, and the gap will just get greater with distance....
long live the E39 M5
I had a hard time letting her go.......
EDIT: plus not sure about your weights! My est. 545 weight is 4200lbs, so how could the 550 be that much lighter?

So the lowly DMS E60 535D can wade into this debate at 5.5secs

Might be very close as u say but i feel a near 5,8-5,9 seconds 0-100km/h. That's 0-62mph wich is a bit different.
I have driven both and owned an e46 M3 for 3 years. I think the 550i may be deceptively fast as it is so smooth and comfortable compared to the M cars. My biggest concern with the 0-60 for the 550 is traction. When I hammer the pedal with the DSC off I start to smoke rubber. And sans a liimited slip differential I just don't think the start would be as good.
I also have observed that BMW tends to be conservative in 0-60 times except when it comes to M cars. I'm not sure why this is.

But i know for a fact that their is no gear change close to 60MPH, so it won't make that much difference. In previous cars (not the RS6 as that was only 5 speed) i'd encounter a gear change at 60MPH, so that would make a difference between 0-60MPH & 0-62MPH.
As said, it was a crude timing & taking the GPS lag into account & no /10ths on the cars stopwatch, i'd stand by the time (roughly). I'll get a better timing over the next few weeks.

Eh no, the E39 M5 did 0-100km/h in 5.3 s due to manufacturer.
manufacturers specs are here http://www.supercars.net/cars/179.html
no longer on the website so i cannot verify, although i DO know that
the e39m5 was quicker than my e46 m3, so i would 100% say its under 5s
Yup! 5.3 seconds and 5.5 for the 550i. 0-100km/h
so the e46 m3 smg coupe does 5.2 according to the manufacturer? and its power to weight ratio is lower... hmmm
gustav from m5 board has videos of this. e60 wins

for specs 0-60 in 4.8seconds and this is the BMW time ...
for the 550i the bmw time is 5.5 ??

Yeagh but what about the set up of the cars? The 550i E60 is built for comfort not for racetrack performace. The M5 E39 has a racing car set up, thats why in formula 1 racing a cars set up will win or loose races. Thats why the M5 was marketed as the fastest 4 door production car in the world!

Ummm ya you could say that. It's more "race" oriented but not so far away as a packed 550i. The diferences are very little but they defenetly are there...

well just like comparing e34 m5 with e39 540i, similar power and all, but come on ///M is a completely different car in the same shell, it has nothing to do with a bog standard 5series
