There is an excellent DIY I found on the M5 forum for this exact issue:Steering angle sensor DIY fix - it worked - BMW M5 Forum and M6 Forums

It includes step by step instructions with pictures which I will be doing this morning. It appears from the write up that the SZL is not just a mechanical part but also has optical qualities which when fouled by dust or a film of grease ( think location just underneath the airbag and susceptible to excessive heat from sunlight as well as dust and residue from cleaning or detailing products).

I will let everyone know how this goes as any tricks that can help me save $780 are at least worth a try!!!
