Straight-line--both off. Road--it depends on how good a driver one is. If road and a good driver, then both off.

Edit: I was talking about with a Steptronic and probably with an SMG. Manuals may suffer more from not being able to leave DSC on and to turn DTC off. DSC and DTC are horsepower killers off the line.

If I turn off both DTC and DSC my car goes seriously sideways. It seems as though there is NO stability or traction control. Has anyone else explored this? I have spun the tires into third gear, 90+ indicated speed, at less than 5 mph actual.

On the M5, there is a differential lock. So the car is very efficient without DTC & DSC. But drifting comes quickly, and you must have pilot skills if you want to use all the car potential !

All other non M BMW's have no diff...

I think that only on the snow you can push DTC & DSC off. Your arms will have a lot of work, but it's so fine when you see you can control your car all the way ... if you're able to. Otherwise, on the dry & on the wet, if you use the correct line & if you have a good feeling in your right foot, you'll drive quicker & safer with all the stuff ON.

With the stuff OFF, if your car starts drifting suddenly in a high speed curve, if you don't have the right immediate reflexe, it's wrecked ... and maybe you also.

From my experience, i can tell that DTC is better to be activated when at drag. Especially if you have an auto, you can do power braking and the DTC or some protection in the gearbox acts as some sort of launch control. Of course not like that, but smth similar. Got the ideea? It would let you rev the car in M1 till 2000 or 2500rpm or so(in my car), with your left foot hard on the brake, and then lift off the foot and there you go, minimal wheel spin. Where with dsc/dtc off you take too much wheel spin (especially when u've got alot of torque stressing the wheels) even if you're carefull with the throttle and that means poor launch.
For racing it's better with it off if you're skillfull enough with the ideal lines and throttle control.

Nick,

Sorry, a 5 series is NOT for racing; either on the street or the track. I have a 545; the best car I ever owned, but it is not built for RACING. It is a pig around corners, I mean real corners (like on a track or canyon road), and it is just way too big and expensive.

Buy a used mid 90's M3, Porsche 911 or Turbo Subaru WRX and go to a track day to learn how to drive fast, race; and if you wreck the car, it will only cost you $20,000 not $50,000.

Or, buy a used Mustang GT and get your Ya-Yas doing brake torques, dougnuts, third gear smokin hole shots instead of wrecking your nice BMW (or your Dads?)!

[/quote]My tests imply that the Step does its best in straight lines with good traction and DTC/DTS off assuming brake torquing is not used. DTC and DTS are huge power killers. In fact, my tests imply that the Step usually is faster even with considerable loss of traction and DTC/DTS off. The Step would do its best with drag radials, brake torquing, and DTC/DTS off. But, regardless, I won't do brake torquing on my car. And, the Step should be able to handle a very very large number of full-bore off-the-line starts with DTC/DTS off and not break provided that brake torquing is not used.
