Short question: Why do some think that using DS gives u better mpg than in D?
I mean, logic and the manual dictates the oposite...using DS will indeed start in the 1st gear, but it will have higher shift points, and it will select either XS or S mode wich either way you put it it will not give better mpg than E an XE.
My experience is as follows. With my B&B on, I did not like the resonance in 6th. So, I drove virtually all the time using DS or manual (M) (including, of course, a combination of DS and M). My approach was to accelerate to speed pretty rapidly and then to cruise--often shifting to 6th eventually. I got about 16.5 MPG in the city. My recollection was that 16.5 was better than I had been getting using D before the B&B.

After taking the B&B off, I went back to using D most of the time--which by the way starts in first after 20.01.00--which is good (my tranny still doesn't shift to 6th automatically when in DS). Now, doing the same kind of driving (actually being less careful to stay "high" on the instantaneous gauge), I am getting above 18. So, I have changed my mind about getting better mileage using DS/Manual. I now believe that DS will produce the better results at least for me.

i Think Znod described it before, the quicker you accelerate to your cruising speed, the less gas you waste ? right ?

I looked for the thread you are talking about, but couldn't find it. There was an article that I referred to in the thread implying that brisk acceleration to cruising speed is likely to produce the best mileage.

There was a report made a couple of years ago in the Netherlands I think it was and they proved this to be the case, as long as it is not city driving!
