Me too- drove through deep water and kapow!! blew light and got message. When next at dealer I requested replacement. Aha they said, I had PIAAs in there so they said for $135 we will put our OEM bulb in. I said never mind and did the PIAA thing again for ~$40. Now before we get Iceman all riled up it was a heavy Florida frog strangler of a rain so I had every light on I could find
I just so happen to have a service appointment scheduled for this Monday, the 15th. I was thinking to ask them to check on it. I'm not worried about replacing the bulbs with OEM since I've already ordered PIAA replacements., plus I still have the OEM bulbs. I'm worried that the bulbs themselves actually shattered leaving glass pieces and what not in the fog light housing which would be impossible to remove without taking everything apart. I haven't actually checked if the bulbs shattered or not.. I should do that in the morning!

Found this on the BMW UK webpages:

"Water on roads - when there is water on the roads, drive through it only to a max. depth of 30 cm, and no faster than walking pace, otherwise the engine, electrical system and transmission may be damaged."

I wonder if BMW would replace your fogs if they are inside the 30cm clearence from the ground - However, even then how can one prove it was less than 30cm depth of water or that speed was walking pace...?

Mine did leave little shards (blueish tinge) in there and slightly discolored the galss from the inside. It does not appear to have a distigushable effect on the lights performance, but "I" know its there and it does bother me a little. At some point I may just go ahead and replace the housing, but for now it is ok.

my automatic gearbox stopped shifting - got stuck in a too high gear - for a few minutes after splashing through water at speed.

foglights? a nuisance, only good for country roads in the dark without other traffic. In all other cases - especially wet conditions - annoying. but that's not this threads discussion.

Reminder then to also turn off your lights way ahead of the moment you drive into a carwash...... The 5 series two models ago (without the headlight cover) had that problem too: hot glass + cold water = very special light dispersion.... Strange that they didn't figure something out for the foglights by now.

Just do some creative searching -- I don't think anyone wants to resurrect that whole thing...

Tip, If you are driving along in the wet, & road ahead suddenly becomes less reflective (looks like a dark area on the road) slow down, it's a deep standing puddle.

Yep! I managed to clean them out using a vacuum with a smaller plastic pipe I duck taped to the end of the vacuum. That smaller pipe fit into the foglight housing and I was able to eventually suck out the glass fragments. I put the OEM bulbs back in while the car is in for service while and I'm waiting for my PIAA replacements.

A nuisance.. yes!
