I am not sure about the US built cars, but here in EU ALL cars are like that.

I am pretty sure every car in the world is just like that...


And it's actually not MORE light, it is just the reflectors inside the lights angled different to illuminate different sections of the road. IN US and mainland EU it is the right side, where the reflector is angled more horizontally, to illuminate more of the right side of the road where the bikers and peds are.

LCI's must have changed then. Mine are the standard Halogen type but definitely have a lever to alter the beam pattern. On a trip earlier in the year to France, I found out when attempting to adjust them whilst waiting to pull onto the ferry that mine had come from the factory set in the wrong position!

 

I'm trying to do the opposite just bought a 2004 e60 model, and i would like to switch them to uk, but i tried having a look, and i can't see a lever , i took off the cap from behind the light(halogen) and there is only what seems like a plastic bit that sticks out and when i touch it seems to move slightly the light reflector casing(hope that's what its called), are we supposed to push that? coz i tried moving it to the side but it won't budge, and i definitely don't want to break it!

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, btw apologies for bringing back this dead post!

I don't know if you're planning to go via Eurotunnel, but if so the AA has a kiosk in the terminal that sells little stick-on plastic diffusers. You just put them on the left-hand side of each of the headlights. They are only like 3 quid or something silly, which is just as well as you obviously have to take them off when you get back to the UK and they aren't reusable.

BTW, if you're not planning to drive within towns at night I don't think I'd bother. The motorways in France are fantastic for people like us who are used to the carriageway in the opposite direction being separated from us by just a piece of Armco. There you often have a fifty metres or so of space, often with trees and bushes, between the carriageways so there is little chance of blinding anybody. Continentals just seem to be so much better at building roads than we are over here.

 

By coincidence this is a relevant post for me.

A mate (I was passenger) got done by the french cops for not having a pack with spare bulbs and fuses and also for not having correctly adjusted headlights nor light foils.

He got done with an immediately payable 150 euro fine. They commented that at least he had GB number plates or he would have been fined further for not having a GB sticker.

I dont have a beef with the cops, they were stopping loads of traffic to do the checks (french cars included) and to be fair it is a rule when driving there so we should adhere to it.
