So that in emergency (not just in accidents), you won't get locked in but you also won't accidentally open the door.

Makes sense. I knew it was some kind of safety feature, but my imagination did not streach to that seemingly unnecessary extreme. Regardless, I'd rather have the option of taking my chances; I am such a risk-seeker, you know. ~{;^) Well, Ok, I used to be.

I am trying to figure out realistically when I might be in danger of opening the door accidentally when single clutching, but wouldn't also be in almost the same danger of opening it accidentally by double clutching. I imagine lawyers are responsible for the double clutching. I am doubting that many of us would vote for double clutching.

Is a BMW thing
That's not true. My last non-bmw conti car also has this "feature". Yes, other cars also have this "feature."

One other small detail that sets BMW apart from M-B in this regard is that when you double pull the handle, only that door unlocks.

In an M-B, pulling either of the front door handles unlocks all four doors which isn't as safe these days. (It's possible that M-B has modified or improved on this in the newer cars, I can't remember how it works on the more recent models I've driven but I'm sure it used to be that way over many years...)

personally i like it i think it is a kid safety feature, like others say it completly eliminates accidently opening the doors and i personally dont like the 1 door unlock them all of the MB or the unlocking when you turn off the car. lots of sinerios come to mind in this day and time as to why BMW implemented a good idea, now as for the Lawers screen that is something else!

I just say let us choose from the reasonable options. There is nothing unreasonable about single or double clutching--especially with no kids (but our dogs are really smart). Indeed, let us choose the number of clutchings we want not to exceed, say, twenty or the number of kids plus dogs whichever is lower. ~{;^)

Door lock/unlock is configurable in iDrive. I set to:

- One press on remote (key) unlocks all doors (instead of driver's door only).
- No automatic door lock when driving.

That's not my problem. My problem is double clutching to open a door after parking/shutting down.

ASAIK, the door has two locking mechanisms; one to lock and one to make sure the door can't fly open in an accident and keep intrusion minimal. I thought the 2-stage door opening was related to this safety feature.

That is correct.
