Does anyone else find 1st gear too long on 6-cyl cars
Hi all,
Who else finds 1st gear too long? I wish it had a lower top speed so 2nd gear would be more usable in city driving. Is it because my car is the lowest power 6-cyl (525) or is it a problem with the more powerful engines also?

Maybe I'm just used to the diesel where 1st gear topped out at 25mph. The 525 tops out at 37mph. Its annoying in the city as the limit is normally 30 so I have to either be burning petrol in 1st or out of the power band in 2nd. I definitely prefer 1st gear just for moving off like the diesel gear ratios are setup.

FWIW, worn Mechatronics seals and tubes and gaskets (and generally worn-out fluid) can cause shift point issues. After a full Mechatronics rework on my N52 E61, the shift points are just about perfect (IMHO, YMMV).
One additional thing - the tranny learns how you drive, and adapts the shift points accordingly. If you live with your foot buried in the carpet, it's gonna "learn" to use higher shift points. If you drive like a little old lady (like me) it's going to learn to shift sooner.
