Finally after 7 troublefree months.....my first problem...
For the past 2 weeks, sometimes when I shift into 5th gear, AFTER I let off the clutch, I would hear a huge grinding noise. I would immediately step on the clutch again to make it go away. Sometimes I do not do that in time and the shifter pops out of 5th and goes to neutral. What is wrong with my transmission?? Since I installed a short shift kit, will the dealer void my warranty and make me pay big bucks for the repair or would it be under warranty?? The dealer i go to is always full and my appointment is for next thursday.....anyone experienced this before??

Dealer will use your short shift kit as an excuse for voiding your warranty. What you can do is to reinstall the original shifter to see how it goes, and hopefully, it'll solve the problem. If not, just bring it to dealer for warranty work.

Thanks....i think i'll just bring it to dealer since installing original shifter would cause me 100 bucks....

I had a similar problem with my 2000 Jetta but it was my 2nd gear that was grinding. It turns out that the problem was the 2nd gear synchro. & the dealership replaced my tranny, but the dealershipp got in a little trouble because a rep from VWoA was at the dealership the dat I picked up my car & he told the Service Manager that the entire tranny should NOT have been replaced & the synchro should have been fixed. I had to argue that the new tranny was already in place & the cost of ripping it out then fixing the old one then installing it @ this point would be too costly & he agreed.

Maybe its your 5th gear synchro?

Peace

Funny, I almost never use 5th gear. 4th to 6th always.
