also of interest from Wikipedia "it is important to note, that the "HD" in HD-Radio does not represent the same thing as the "HD" stands for in HDTV. For television the "HD" stands for "High Definition" but in the case of HD-Radio the "HD" actually stands for "Hybrid Digital" according to the developing company Ibiquity."

Convenient for the marketeers!

As stated here HD radio has nothing to do with HDTV but is a digital radio broadcast service which is incompatable with DAB which is also a digital radio service.
Users of the world should unite in shooting the regulators who make incompatable international standards, NTSC, PAL & SECAM are examples of a madness that should have long since disapeared alas but no we now have two competing HD DVD formats from Sony & Tosihba the world never learns.

Actually the TV colour encoding systems PAL and SECAM "merged" with the advent of DVD and now NTSC and PAL have "disappeared" with the advent of HDTV.

So there is hope that standards unify over time.

Really? Here NTSC is turning into ATSC (aka Direct Broadcast HDTV). Is the EU also supporting ATSC? I thought it was only used in North America and a few Asian countries.

A more basic question for the HD Radio working in Germany... does regular FM in a US spec car even work in Germany? I thought the frequency spacing was different between the two. Or will the radio auto tune to the local frequency?

Some terms can confuse.

PAL, SECAM and "NTSC" are analogue broadcast TV colour encoding standards. ATSC is a series of (18) US digital broadcasting standards which *includes* HDTV.

This gives further information.

No, EU supports DVB. I think the only Asian country that uses ATSC is South Korea.

Does the Satellite Radio and HD Radio for the US specs, work in Germany?
What do they do?

I'm buying a US spec. e60 and I would like to know if I can use the Satellite Radio and HD Radio in Germany/Europe?
Anyone know the answer?
Thanks everyone, it was starting to get a little confusing but, I got the message "No" for US Specs in Germany.
I was about to order it, but you all saved the day
