I know that Direct Line car insurance will 'return to invoice' cost within the first 12 months of buying a new car. After that I think it is worth shopping around. I took out some shortfall insurance -- wanted to protect my investment as i put a large deposit down. If you're leasing and are not taking as large a risk then its a balance between peace of mind and can I afford it.

Good luck.

Most insurance companies will return to invoice within the first 12 months, but worth checking.

Also consider GAP insurance from Hitachi Capital.

3 years GAP cover for my 530D Tourer was ?269 for the difference between insurers payout and invoice, with a limit of ?20,000.

I arranged it through www.car-finance.net

Thanks. I assume you take this out when the car is 1 year old - when insurance company dont cover new list price

I take it out for the first year or so then lapse it, they (Lombard) reduced my rate a tad so that the insurance was in effect free (must be a targetted sale!).
Be aware that most of the policies have a maximum payout value. Lombard's was a bit higher than BMW's from memory.
