whats wrong with shell

Hi Yo! Is that a question? I didn't see a question mark.

The reference to Shell relates to a thread (on 5series.net) spanning the last couple weeks about gasoline. You might find it using the search feature on the Forum.

sixcard

I have no problem with Shell.

EDIT: The "shell" thread is still active ... was a post this evening at ax 2132.

Today I ran 5.7 miles past O miles to empty. I made it to the fuel pump and pumped 17.95 gallons.

Does anyone one know or will anyone speculate how much fuel is in the tank when the cluster reports empty?

Bravo Tango Foxtrot Whiskey, it wasn?t Shell.

sixcard
In tank fuel pumps depend on the fuel in the tank for cooling. Running the tank down to empty or close to it is a sure way to toast your fuel pump!
When I get under 1/4 tank I start looking for a filling station.

Nothing is wrong with Shell. It is actually one of the better gasolines out there (that's all I use). It was suggested on a previous thread that in one of the southern states the premium version of the Shell brand was not being used as much as the regular version because of the economy thus leaving the premium gas in the underground tanks longer to become stale. This is probably a regional thing since in the bigger states there are probably more cars that require premium.

John, IIRC, BMWs tend to have about 2.5 gallons in reserve when the warning triggers. I believe that's what it was on my 325, and others have stated something similar. I'm too chicken to find out. Since I had a debris issue in high school running on fumes, I never drop below 1/4 of a tank. It does happen sometimes anyway, I know.

I understand that in some states in the USA it is an offence to run out of fuel,is that still the case?I don't know the answer to the original question because it is of no interest to me!
The only time I have discussed this subject with anyone was when a colleague was talking about his family holiday in Spain. He was returning a rental car to the airport at the end of the holiday.
He had to pay for a full tank and return it empty, which is still the norm.He really pushed it to the limit on the route back to the airport, coasting down every incline in neutral and pressing the accelerator pedal as though it was an egg with a wafer thin shell. He claimed that he drove over 15Km "sucking fumes" from the empty tank! The stress ruined his holiday!

What do you mean a debris issue? I've always thought the whole thing about debris at the bottom of the tank causing a problem was a myth!

90% of the time, I refill after my tank is 1/2 empty or 1/2 full.

I fill up as soon as my tank hits 3/4. I'm paranoid like that.....
