Today I ran 5.7 miles past O miles to empty. I made it to the fuel pump and pumped 17.95 gallons.

Does anyone one know or will anyone speculate how much fuel is in the tank when the cluster reports empty?

Bravo Tango Foxtrot Whiskey, it wasn?t Shell.

I have no clue how much past empty you can stretch it, but man, thank god you didn't go to a Shell!

Yeah, you don't want to get shell-shocked.

According to edmunds, our car (at least an 04 545i) has a 18.5 gallon tank. If you then add the fuel you could also put in the filler neck, I'd estimate a total of 19 gallons could be held at best.

You said you went 5.7 miles past empty, or based on your avg mpg, used about 1/4 of a gallon.

If you subtract .25 from 17.95 (how much you put in) your car reads 0 miles left at 17.7 gallons. So based on that, you likely had a bit over a gallon of gas left when you hit 0, or maybe 25 miles? That would be my best guess.

nice math, that seems about right. I drove 10miles home from school with it reading "---" not even 0, just "---"

That's pushing it ...

I have tested the gallons left once reserve light comes on and it's about 2.5 gallons for my car. That gives me ample cruising range to avoid driving on fumes.

i just read the manual and it says for a 550i it has a 2.6 reserve included in an approx. 18.5 gallon tank.
is that 2.6 gallons left after my fuel reads zero?
or once the fuel warning comes on i have 2.6 gallons left?

So you're crossing off "risky driving" off the bucket list then?
