There is a design flaw with the fuel pump/injection system. Plain and simple.

I don't think gas has anything to do with this issue. BMW isn't the first company to use a high pressure fuel pump.

 

Nah, US fuel is not likely a problem with DI motors at all. Most manufacturers are offering a DI enigne option for the US market now. If fuel was remotely an issue they would not have taken such risk. I've never heard of any issues with any Audi DI motors. BMW needs to go back to their supplier and demand a redesign of their HPFP.
