I just read in the Roundel magazine that this can be done through a software change requested at the dealer.

Yep.
It was way too bright and a software update dimmed the light.
It's not that YOU can dim it, but with that software update it gets dimmed a little bit.

My light is too bright too. My 525i was just delivered. (May build date) Does that mean that I have the software? Is it something that I can do, or do I need to have the dealer dim the light?
Can the passenger side airbag simply be turned on all the time so that the light stays out?

I don't think the airbag can be turned on all of the time. You can get the software updated to dim it, but I don't think that they will enable it full time due to legalities.

In the US, the NHTSA requires the light on ALL cars with Pax airbags now... So by law BMW NA cannot assist in helping you disable it.

The passenger seat belt light has never been that big of a deal with me. The only times I even notice it are the rare occasions when I have a passenger. I check to see if it went out. It always has except on one occasion. I then asked my passenger to unhook and rehook. The light went out.

I like knowing my passenger is protected.

It could be worse. I was riding around in my brother-in-law's Chevy Avalance truck this past week and noticed that his passenger airbag light is ALWAYS on. It's located across the bottom of the rear-view mirror and when a passenger sits in the seat, it changes from "Passenger Airbag OFF" to "Passenger Airbag ON".

Way to go GM!
