This happened a couple of times to me now: I enter an address, tell the system to find the short route and it calculates a time (e.g. this morning, it gave me 64 min). Then I try fast route, and it calculates a different route that take longer (this morning, it was 79 min) . What am I missing here????

Perhaps it means you drive faster rather than get there quicker! Must be the M5 option pack!

I wish I had the M5 option pack. Is there a secret switch combination I don't know (like press IDrive controlle 27 times while holding light switch with you left knee...)

If you drive faster over the shorter route, then you can get there faster than if you take the faster route and drive the speed limit. The navs are retarded in general. Another example of Seimens-VDO snatching defeat from victory.

Maybe check the miles to destination and see if the short is shorter. I find it hard to manipulate the route. Nav Lady has a mind of her own, but she will finally aquiesce if you persevere while enroute.

The calculation is made by predefined speeds.
City, outside of the city limits and highways.
Then you have the settings fast and short. When you select fast, you will get a route that brings you to the destination as fast as possible, all with those predefined speeds used. Short means, the shortest route will be given to you, that's the shortest distance between your current position and your destination.
So, for the shortest the distance is the main factor. If there is a possible way around town withusing highways, a fast route could bring up the longer driving distance around town.
In the end it's all programmed by somebody who is a human, and therefore, not perfect.
I have been in a situation were my destination was only 1 Km away from the point I have programmed the nav. It gave me a 7 Km route. Not the shortest, not the fastest. But once I left the route and drove the "correct" street, it adjusted.
Dealing with navigation systems means you need to be very patient.

If I drive at some late nights with high speeds, my nav give me a new ETA time due to the high speed I'm driving! That's cool!

The ETA is tied to the cars current (or average) speed for sure...

That's correct.
While you drive the time will be calculated new. So, if you drive faster than the predefined, your ETA goes down because you arrive earlier. If you drive slower it's the opposite, of course.
