That gives me a little peace of mind...The sound is to a point where it doesn't scare me and also considering it happens occasionally. Did the dealer also mention this on engine start-up? I get the rattle on shut-down all the time.. But the 'start-up' rattle only happens once in a while and sounds a little bit different than the rattle when it shuts down.
Take the car to your local BMW Service anyway.

At least you sleep better...

I'm heading to my local BMW service on Monday. There is a BMW dealership literally a block from my house but I've only heard bad things about that place so I have to drive quite a way out..... My Dunlop Run-Flats are also making noise on the driver side due to uneven wear so I'm going to try and get them replaced under warranty also before I slap my iForged wheels back on. I'm also going to try and see if I can somehow convince them to update my iDrive so I can play mp3's. Any suggestions on how to 'ask' for this the proper way so they'll actually do it?

Okay, I just went back out to the car and did a start/shut-off numerous times and it's fine. I'm only getting the clatter at shut-off.
I have a feeling that my local BMW dealer is just going to tell me that 'there is nothing wrong with it and that everything is normal' since I can't replicate the sound every time.

Tape it incase you can not replicate it at the dealer. At least you'll have a leg to stand on when you go to the dealer and can't replicate the problem.

That's exactly what was going through my head....But it only happens rarely so it's kind of a pain to carry a recording device out with me and tape the car every time I start-up. The trouble with this is it happens randomly (not on cold start-up, etc.). I'm just guessing, but from the sound of the 'rattle' I don't think it's something immediately serious. Almost sounds like the engine is not tightened down.
