Morning everybody.
A short period back I posted a note about replacing my front pads as the idrive reported 7k or less to change the pads. I bought front pads and rotors, and proceeded to take the tires off. Upon removal I noticed that the wear sensor was dangling, and not in position. I removed the sensor, and compared to the new one I bought. There was a large chunk of plastic missing from one of the sides, which prevented it from being seated properly. I then visually inspected the rotor, which looked good. I noticed that the pads when seated, still looked very thick. I removed the caliper and popped out the pads. Compared them to the new factory replacements. Pads appeared to be somewhere between 1/8th to 1/4th as worn as the new ones. I put the old pads back in and remounted the caliper. Is it plausible that the broken sensor was giving a false reading? It wasn't even in contact with the brakes.
Should I just have put in the new pads? I'm guessing the error took place due to the sensor not being where it was supposed to be. I reset the car computer, and the brakes now read 25,000 miles. Will CBS correct that over time? Or did I screw something up further?
Thanks.

Sounds like the original pads are fine and it was just the sensor malfunctioning.

the sensor triggers a fault when the brake pads wear to the point that they expose the metal wire within the sensor and cut it. The mileage readings are an estimate from the car's service interval calculations, with no input whatsoever from that sensor until the wire is broken. if you properly replaced the broken sensor and put it back in its place on the indentation in the pad, you did the correct thing.
your pads may last more than the 25k, or less, depending on your driving style. the brake pad warning won't appear until the sensor is broken.
